Sometimes in this world you just need a little respite. Yes – it’s important to understand the emerging mega-trend that is Superconductivity (we’ve an email on that – ask if you want it – it makes heavy stuff float is the nutshell version). Yes – we need to follow what’s going on in Taiwan and the Ukraine and elsewhere in the world. And yes – we need to understand the potential ramifications as the Donald appears in court on charges of plotting to overturn the 2020 election. But sometimes you j…

So the Redburn interns are on Week 3 of their summer placements here and it is safe to say that after a nervy start they are getting into their stride. What wouldn’t you give to be 21 again ey. Already today we’ve had one of them write a system to improve our IOIs while another one whizzed up an Excel spreadsheet that speaks to our CRM thingy. Properly clever stuff and this lot can look you in the eye and have a chat and everything. Can they do a breakfast run for 20 in the pouring rain though?…

Ah this is more familiar. The old seat-of-the-pants Snapshot. Zero time to prep. Far too much going on. The temptation to let one through the slips then the realization that we’ve had a Major Move in the Market and you told your friend and colleague Courteney that you wouldn’t let him down and with 10 minutes to go you tumble it all together. Was it actually a big move though? Well the main message is no damage done YET. This was a flesh wound of a day (Stoxx 600 -2.34%) but only Month Python f…

It’s all a bit breathless at the moment isn’t it. No sooner has the Glastonbury / Ascot / Lords bonanza finished than Wimbledon and July 4th BBQs rear their heads. Throw in weddings (Johanna on our team is getting married this weekend – we’ve vetted the groom – he seems to measure up) and end-of-school festivities and it is no wonder that thoughts start to turn to the peace and quiet of a holiday. Today felt as though it was going to be a bit “holiday-ish” with a half day in the US ahead of the…

OK so hands up who opened their BBQ this weekend for the first time and realized that the annual vow you make to yourself to “properly clean it before putting it away for the winter” never quite happened. If a new global pandemic breaks out in the coming weeks it is very possible that the epicentre is the Quick family Weber such was the biodiversity uncovered. Worth it though ey – who doesn’t love starting a BBQ in the bright May sunshine and ending up eating inside because the temperature has…

Aaaah – here he is. The goal hanger. The glory hunter. The Gary Lineker of sales trading. Yes we’ve an important announcement to make so I’ve eased Courteney out of the way and claimed today’s Snapshot as my own. He’s had too much fun summarising the 18 consecutive days of bumping gently sideways (Stoxx 600 +0.18%). End of the month tomorrow and this could be the first month without a +/-1% move for the Stoxx 600 since Sept 2019. A nightmare for end-of-day writers that you may remember I suffer…

It’s a new dawn. It’s a new day. It’s a new life. For me us. And I’m we’re feeeeeeeling good. Yes that’s right – a brave new dawn for Redburn as we spent yesterday busily working on our first ever ECM transaction. Joint bookrunners on an Accelerated Book Build in SigmaRoc with everything running – dare we say it? – relatively smoothly. Shares up 7% today and we did our B&D’ing (IYKYK) without any drama. “On to the next one!” barked our irrepressible head of ECM and I’d say we could get quite us…

“You’ve had a Five-Kilo-Christmas” said a wise (if slightly too honest) old head as he saw me squeezed uncomfortably into my suit for the first time this year and my goodness he’s not wrong. Easy and fun to put that weight on, tougher and less fun to take it off. But that’s what January’s for isn’t it. The month-long equivalent of a Monday morning. Head down and get on with it and lets focus on markets which right now are starting to look a little on the greedy side too.

It’s a bit like a kindergarten in the Redburn office at the moment. You know the form. Everyone starts off all healthy in September and then the next few weeks are spent finding out just how many variants of influenza there are in London. The Kent crew bring their strain to the Essex types who get the Chelsea mob coughing and spluttering. Only us North Londoners sailing through unscathed of course. We don’t let illness get in the way of the day job. No no no.

Another day with plenty of huff and puff to it but no houses blowing down while – despite plenty of noise – volumes remain conspicuous by their absence. Are we at the start of another reluctant rally? Plenty of echoes of the June to August squeeze and our Charts team went all literary on me with a Mark Twain quote today. “History doesn’t repeat itself but it often rhymes,” they opined looking into the near distance. I think someone needs a Sazerac.
