August has been a month to forget for many investors/observers of European Equity markets. It has brought with it a slide in global Equity shares inline with what our charts team flagged as fairly neutral to negative seasonality (which sadly doesn’t improve much in September), the lowest volumes of the year, on almost every week consecutively and without any major Central bank decision, it has been a month of pondering what lies ahead, which never usually leads to too much excitement. The Stoxx…

If you’re a seasoned commuter like myself, especially in the UK, you’ll no doubt at some point have fallen foul to the old “Wrong type of… snow / rain / leaves” (delete as applicable) excuse when it comes to delays or mishaps. It did strike me as a little ironic that today’s majorly underperforming sector, the Utilities space has been hit by material impairments at Orsted related to its troubled US offshore wind assets, sending shs down 25%! This on a day where news stations are awash with foot…

“France is going to do what?!” I know I have mentioned before in the Snapshot as one of the things least exposed to inflation but news over the weekend that France is preparing to spend €200mn destroying a glut of wine that has built up as appetite for French wine fades did shock me. Falling demand among French drinkers, competition on the export market and weaker sales in China are being blamed but surely there has to be a better way of getting rid of French wine than destroying it!? I can thi…

National burger day and look no further than the Snapshot to guide you through where to go and what to swerve. All my own opinions of course and I am sure I’ll be getting some push back. I’ll start with my steer clear – Five Guys – absolutely no time for it, maybe it was a bad experience but I just found the whole thing very underwhelming from the taste to the greasy chip bag. Where would my vote go? Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen Chicken Burger; tasty, sizeable and the best chips going – another pl…

Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me. I’m all about second chances but it was slightly strange to see Fyre Festival – the disastrous luxury party that left hundreds stranded in the Bahamas in 2017 and famously made into one of the crazier Netflix documentaries is getting a second run. Tickets will likely set you back in the region of $8000 and that is a hell of a lot of money to go to a Festival devised from a solitary confinement cell in a U.S. prison. Especially if the U.S…

Does anyone care about Bitcoin anymore? It all feels a bit ‘So 2020’ and although we probably need to be aware of it, its use and ability in describing risk appetite in the Equity market isn’t as strong. I recently re-joined twitter ‘X’, not as an avid ‘tweeter’ per-se but to see various headlines (and where Glydo gets all his Midweek Tweets of note from) and saw today that an unknown entity has accumulated over $3bn worth of Bitcoin in less than 3 months. Lots of debate following regarding who…

I’m not really sure what to make of today, it might have been my depleted energy levels post (yet another) air-traffic-related delay flying back into Heathrow last night (I’m sure I am not the only one who has been a victim this summer) but Monday’s have become increasingly slow of late. The summer months drift on (and drift being the key word) and today was no exception with volumes falling close to a standstill across the major European indices. Understandable maybe given the highlight of the…

Today we heard the news that TV legend Michael Parkinson sadly passed away after suffering a short illness. A king of the chat show circuit, the interviewer’s job is to unearth breaking news, & funny stories to keep the audience captivated, but it’s not unheard of for those interviewed to uncomfortably turn on their host, as Parky found with Emu, and Russell Harty witnessed live on air with Grace Jones. RIP Michael Parkinson 1935-2023

I’m sure that this will resonate with many but I find myself about to embark on a Golf holiday and have high hopes for shooting low in all 3 rounds, playing some of the best golf I have ever played, and winning the trophy. The reality is I’ve bought a new wedge, upgraded my 6 iron, regripped my putter, haven’t practiced in 6 months and I am, day by day, becoming a worse golfer than the peak (at around age 13). Oh well, at least at the time of writing I am optimistic. Optimism feels like it is f…

Hoping this still comes through okay from my new fancy @redburnatlantic.com email address which is getting its first taste of a Daily Snapshot. I’m not usually good with change but I’m very much liking the new colour scheme, almost has that Scottish feel about it just in time for Rugby World Cup. All eyes on the Lionesses tomorrow though and I am definitely rooting for a big win over the host Matilda’s (Chloe Kelly with a 87th minute winner if you ask me) but nothing is easy when you get to thi…
